Understanding the Stink Bug Invasion Pattern

The brown marmorated stink bug, introduced to North America from Asia in the 1990s, has rapidly spread to become one of the most common nuisance pests across the eastern and midwestern United States. Unlike most home-invading insects, stink bugs do not breed indoors, reproduce in your walls, or cause structural damage. Their invasion is purely about overwintering: as autumn temperatures drop, they begin searching for warm sheltered locations and are attracted to the heat signature of human structures.

A property that becomes infested one year will experience the same invasion in subsequent years if no preventive action is taken. Stink bugs release aggregation pheromones that signal to other stink bugs that a location is suitable for overwintering, essentially marking your home as a preferred destination for future generations of the pest.
